Most bad content starts with a bad brief. The seven things a one-page content brief needs, with a worked example you can copy.

Most bad writing is caused by a bad brief, not a bad writer. When a piece comes back generic, off-target or needing three rounds of edits, the problem usually started before anyone typed a word: nobody wrote down who the reader is, what they need to walk away knowing, and what makes this piece different from everything already published. A good brief fixes most of that, and it fits on one page.

I’ve written and edited content for a long time, on both sides of the brief. Here’s the one I keep coming back to.

Why most briefs don’t work

The typical brief is a title and a keyword. Sometimes there’s a word count. Occasionally, “make it engaging”. The writer, with nothing else to go on, produces the safest possible version of the topic, which reads exactly like every other article on page one of Google. Then the feedback arrives: “It’s fine, but it doesn’t really sound like us.” Of course it doesn’t. Nobody said what “us” sounds like.

The other common failure is the opposite: a twelve-page brand document attached to every request. Nobody reads it. The useful information is in there somewhere, but the writer has to dig it out every time.

The one-page brief

1. Who is reading this?

Be specific. Not “small business owners” but “owners of trade businesses with two to ten staff who handle their own marketing and are sceptical of agencies”. The more specific the reader, the more specific the writing.

2. What question are they asking?

Write the actual question in the reader’s words. “How do I get more Google reviews without being pushy?” is far more useful than “Google reviews”. This also tells the writer what the first paragraph needs to answer.

3. What should they know or do afterwards?

One or two sentences. “They should understand that asking at the right moment matters more than the method, and they should have a simple script they can use this week.” If you can’t write this, you’re not ready to brief the piece.

4. What’s our angle?

This is the part most briefs skip, and it’s the most important. What do you know, believe or have seen that other articles on this topic don’t say? A strong opinion, a client story, internal data, a mistake you’ve made. Without an angle, you get a summary of the internet.

5. What must be included, and what must be avoided?

Key points, facts that need checking, products to mention, competitors not to name, claims you can’t make. Keep it to bullet points.

6. Sources and examples

Link to two or three pieces you like the tone of, and any reliable sources the writer should use. Showing beats describing every time.

7. The practical details

Target keyword if relevant, rough length, deadline, who gives feedback, and where it will be published. Put these last, because they matter least to the quality of the writing.

A quick example

Reader: Café owners in regional towns who run their own social media.
Question: “Is it worth paying to boost Facebook posts for a small café?”
Afterwards: They’ll know when boosting is worth a small spend and when it’s wasted, and how to test it with $50.
Angle: Most café boosting fails because people boost their best-looking photos rather than their most useful posts, like new opening hours or a weekly special.
Include: A simple test plan. Avoid: naming specific agencies.
Examples: Two links to posts with a friendly, practical tone.
Details: About 900 words, due Friday, feedback from the owner only.

That took five minutes to write. It will probably save an hour of edits.

The brief is also a test

If you can’t fill in the angle and the outcome, that’s useful information. It usually means the piece isn’t worth writing yet, or it needs a conversation with someone who knows the subject. Killing a weak idea at the brief stage is far cheaper than killing it after it’s been written, designed and approved.

FAQ

What should a content brief include?

The target reader, the question they’re asking, what they should know or do afterwards, your unique angle, must-include and must-avoid points, example links and sources, and practical details such as length, keyword and deadline.

How long should a content brief be?

One page is enough for most articles. Long brand guidelines are useful as background, but the brief itself should be short enough that the writer reads all of it.

Who should write the content brief?

Ideally, the person who understands the reader and the business goal best, often a marketer or subject expert. The writer can help shape it, but shouldn’t have to invent the angle alone.

Why does my content all sound generic?

Usually because the brief doesn’t include an angle: an opinion, story or piece of data only your business has. Without one, writers fall back on what’s already been published.

The ultimate guide promises everything and usually delivers little. Why focused articles and content clusters now beat sprawling long-form guides.

The “ultimate guide” has become one of the least useful formats in content marketing. It promises to cover everything, so it usually covers nothing well. Readers arrive with one specific question, scroll past 4,000 words of preamble, and leave. In most cases you’d get better results publishing five focused articles than one sprawling guide.

I know this is an unpopular view. The ultimate guide was the darling of content strategy for the best part of a decade, and plenty of agencies still sell them. But the reasons it worked have mostly gone, and the reasons it fails haven’t.

Why ultimate guides took off

Around the mid-2010s, studies kept finding that longer pages ranked higher. Marketers took the obvious lesson: write longer. “The Ultimate Guide to X” became the template. Get every subtopic onto one page, make it longer than anything else, collect backlinks, rank for everything.

For a while, that genuinely worked. Search engines were less sophisticated about matching a page to the specific intent behind a query, and a huge page had more chances to match more searches.

The trouble is that length was correlated with rankings, not the cause of them. The long pages ranked because they were often the most thorough and the most linked to. When everyone started writing long, length stopped being a differentiator and started being a burden.

What’s wrong with them now

They don’t match how people search

Nobody searches for “everything about email marketing”. They search for “how often should I send a newsletter” or “best time to send marketing emails in Australia”. A focused page answers that question in its first paragraph. An ultimate guide answers it in section 7, somewhere below the fold, after a table of contents and a history lesson.

They’re hard to keep accurate

A 5,000-word guide touches dozens of facts, tools and recommendations. Within a year, some of them are out of date. Updating a monster page is a big job, so it rarely happens, and the guide slowly rots. Five smaller articles can each be reviewed and refreshed in half an hour.

They’re padded by design

When the goal is “longer than the competition”, writers fill space. Definitions everyone knows. Obvious tips. Summaries of the section you just read. Readers notice, and they skim, and then they leave.

They don’t suit AI search

AI tools pull short, clear passages that answer a question directly. A focused article where the answer comes first is easy to cite. An answer buried halfway down a sprawling guide is easy to miss.

What to do instead

Build a cluster, not a monolith

Take the topics your ultimate guide would have covered and turn each one into its own focused article. Then write a shorter hub page that introduces the topic and links clearly to each piece. Readers get to the exact answer they want, and search engines see a well-organised body of work on the subject.

Make each piece answer one question well

If you can’t sum up an article’s purpose in a single question, it’s probably trying to do too much. “How do I write a subject line people actually open?” is a good article. “Email marketing” is a book.

Let length follow the question

Some questions need 600 words. Some need 2,500. Neither is right or wrong. Write until the question is properly answered, then stop.

When a long guide still makes sense

I’m not saying never. Long guides can work when:

The reader genuinely needs to follow a long process from start to finish, like setting up accounting software or planning a wedding.

You have original research, data or experience that only makes sense presented together.

The page is designed as a reference people come back to, with strong navigation and regular updates.

Notice what those have in common. The length serves the reader. It isn’t there to beat a word count on a competitor’s page.

FAQ

Do longer blog posts rank better?

Not because of their length. Longer pages often rank well because they’re thorough and well linked, but a focused page that answers a specific question clearly can outrank a longer one.

What is a content cluster?

A group of focused articles on related subtopics, connected by a hub page that introduces the main topic and links to each article. It helps readers and search engines navigate a subject.

How long should a blog post be?

Long enough to answer the reader’s question properly and no longer. That might be 600 words or 2,500 words depending on the topic.

Should I split my existing ultimate guide into smaller posts?

If it covers several distinct questions and isn’t performing well, it’s worth considering. Keep the original URL as the hub page, redirect nothing that doesn’t need to move, and link to the new focused articles from it.

Writing for AI Answers: What Actually Changes (and What Doesn’t)

Writing for AI search mostly means writing clearly: answer first, make sections stand alone, be specific. What changes and what stays the same.

Writing for AI answers mostly means writing clearly for people: answer the question early, be specific, and make each section make sense on its own. What changes is the price of being vague. AI search tools pull short passages out of pages and stitch them into answers, so content that buries its point under a long introduction simply doesn’t get used. What doesn’t change is that useful, accurate, original content still wins.

There’s a lot of noise about “optimising for AI”. Some of it is sensible. Plenty of it is old SEO tricks with a new label. Here’s how I separate the two.

What actually changes

The answer has to come first

Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and similar tools tend to lift a sentence or short paragraph that directly answers the question. If your page spends three paragraphs on “In today’s fast-paced digital landscape” before getting to the point, a tool scanning for an answer may never reach it. Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences, then expand.

Sections need to stand on their own

AI systems often work with chunks of a page rather than the whole thing. A section that begins “As mentioned above, this is why it matters” loses its meaning when pulled out alone. Write each section so a reader dropped straight into it would understand it. Name the thing you’re talking about instead of saying “it” or “this”.

Headings work better as questions people actually ask

A heading like “Considerations” tells nobody anything. “How long does it take to see results from content marketing?” matches how people phrase questions to an AI tool, and it tells the reader exactly what the next paragraph will deliver.

Specifics beat generalities

“Content marketing can take time to show results” is true and useless. “Most new blogs take six to twelve months to build meaningful organic traffic, depending on competition and how often they publish” gives an AI tool, and a person, something worth quoting. Numbers, examples, named tools and clear recommendations get picked up. Hedged filler doesn’t.

Being cited matters as much as ranking

Many AI answers show a handful of source links. Getting cited depends on having the clearest, most trustworthy passage on the topic, which isn’t always the same as ranking first for the keyword. It’s a new kind of visibility, and it rewards depth and clarity over length.

What doesn’t change

Thin content still loses

No formatting trick will make a generic article useful. If your piece says the same thing as the ten articles above it, there’s no reason for a person or an AI system to prefer it. Original experience, data and opinion are still the strongest signals you can offer.

Technical basics still matter

Search engines and AI crawlers still need to be able to reach, read and understand your pages. Clean HTML, sensible headings, fast load times and not blocking crawlers you want to be found by are as important as ever.

Trust is still earned off the page

Mentions in reputable publications, reviews, a clear author and a real business behind the site all help AI tools decide what’s credible, just as they help traditional search. You can’t format your way to authority.

Keyword stuffing is still pointless

Repeating a phrase fifteen times was a bad idea in 2015 and it’s a bad idea now. Language models are very good at understanding meaning. Write naturally and cover the topic well.

A simple checklist

Does the first paragraph answer the main question directly?

Would each section make sense if someone read only that section?

Are the headings phrased the way a real person would ask?

Have I included at least one specific number, example or recommendation in each section?

Is there anything here that only we could have written, from our experience, data or point of view?

Is it obvious who wrote this and why they’re worth listening to?

If you can tick all six, you’ve written something that works for search engines, AI tools and, most importantly, the person who asked the question in the first place.

FAQ

Do I need a separate strategy for AI search?

Not really. The practices that help content appear in AI answers, such as clear structure, direct answers and genuine expertise, are the same ones that make content good for people and traditional search.

How do AI tools choose which websites to cite?

They generally favour passages that answer the question clearly and specifically, from sources that appear trustworthy. Clear structure, accurate information and signs of real expertise all help.

Should every blog post include an FAQ section?

It’s useful when there are genuine follow-up questions readers ask. An FAQ gives you short, self-contained answers that suit both readers who skim and AI tools that extract passages.

Does content length matter for AI search?

Less than clarity does. A focused 800-word piece that answers the question well can outperform a 3,000-word guide that wanders.

Most content calendars fail by month three because they're wish lists, not production systems. How to build one around capacity that lasts.

Most content calendars fail by month three because they’re built as a list of topics rather than a production system. The first month runs on enthusiasm, the second on guilt, and by the third the calendar is a spreadsheet of good intentions nobody opens. The fix isn’t better topics. It’s planning for capacity, ownership and the dull mechanics of getting a piece from idea to published.

I’ve watched this happen in businesses of every size, from a two-person studio to a marketing team of twenty. The pattern is so consistent it’s almost funny.

Month one: the calendar is a wish list

Someone runs a planning session. There’s a whiteboard, sticky notes and genuine energy. The result is a beautiful calendar: two blog posts a week, a newsletter every Friday, daily social posts, a monthly video. Every slot has a topic. Some even have keywords.

What it doesn’t have is an honest answer to one question: who is going to write all this, and when?

Content calendars are usually built by working out what the business would like to publish. They should be built by working out what the business can actually produce, then deciding what to cut.

Month two: real work arrives

The person responsible for the blog also has a day job. A client project runs late. Someone goes on leave. One post slips, then two. Approvals take longer than expected because the managing director wants to “have a quick look” at everything.

Nobody decides to abandon the calendar. It just becomes something that’s always slightly behind, and being behind is demoralising. People start avoiding it.

Month three: the quiet death

By now the calendar is more fiction than plan. The topics planned for March are irrelevant by May. Nobody updates it, so nobody trusts it, so nobody uses it. The next planning session, if there is one, starts from scratch and repeats the cycle.

What actually keeps a calendar alive

Plan for your worst month, not your best

Work out how many hours are genuinely available for content across a bad month: leave, end-of-quarter crunch, illness. Plan to that. If that means one good article a fortnight instead of two a week, publish one good article a fortnight. Consistency beats volume, and you can always add more once the habit sticks.

Give every piece one owner

“Marketing” can’t own a blog post. A person has to. That person is responsible for moving it through every stage, even when other people write, review or design parts of it. Shared ownership is how pieces end up sitting in draft for six weeks.

Track stages, not just dates

A calendar that only shows publish dates hides where work gets stuck. Track each piece through brief, draft, review, edit, design and scheduled. You’ll quickly find the bottleneck. In my experience it’s almost always review.

Cap the review loop

Set a rule: one round of stakeholder feedback, with a deadline. If someone doesn’t respond in time, the piece goes ahead. This sounds harsh. It’s the single change that does the most to keep content moving.

Build a buffer

Aim to have two or three finished pieces ready to go at any time. When a bad week hits, you publish from the buffer instead of falling behind. Getting the buffer built takes effort up front, but it removes most of the stress afterwards.

Leave a third of the slots open

Planning every topic three months ahead guarantees some of them will be stale by the time you get to them. Fill around two-thirds of the calendar in advance and leave the rest for timely topics, customer questions and things you learn along the way.

A calendar is a promise to yourself

The best content calendars I’ve seen are surprisingly boring. They’re modest, realistic and a little bit conservative. They’re also still running a year later, which is the only measure that matters. Search engines and audiences both reward the business that keeps turning up, not the one that published twelve pieces in January and nothing after Easter.

If your calendar has already died, don’t feel bad. Just build the next one around what you can sustain, not what you hope for.

FAQ

How often should a small business publish blog content?

As often as it can sustain at good quality. For many small businesses that’s one solid article every one or two weeks. A steady rhythm over a year is worth far more than a burst followed by silence.

What should a content calendar include?

At minimum: the topic, the owner, the target publish date, the current stage (brief, draft, review, edit, scheduled) and where the piece will be shared. Keywords and target audience are useful additions.

Why do content calendars fail?

Usually because they’re based on ambition rather than capacity, nobody owns individual pieces, and review rounds drag on. The calendar falls behind, people lose faith in it, and it gets abandoned.

How far ahead should I plan content?

About one quarter ahead is enough for most businesses. Fill roughly two-thirds of the slots and keep the rest open for timely topics.

In the dynamic world of digital marketing, content marketing has emerged as a powerhouse strategy for businesses aiming to connect with their target audience. Through the lens of success stories, content marketing case studies provide valuable insights and lessons for marketers seeking to elevate their strategies.

Introduction

In the vast landscape of digital marketing, content is king. As businesses navigate the complexities of reaching their audience in a crowded online space, content marketing has proven to be a game-changer. This article explores the fascinating world of content marketing case studies, offering a deep dive into success stories that illuminate the path to effective digital communication.

What Are Content Marketing Case Studies?

Content marketing case studies serve as documented evidence of successful strategies implemented by businesses. Content marketing channels, including blog posts, SEO, social media, video, paid ads, and affiliate marketing, play a pivotal role in Canva’s strategy. Leveraging personalised and shareable experiences in content campaigns can boost user retention and transform marketing efforts into cultural phenomena. Emphasising creativity, psychology, and technology aligns with the evolving expectations of digital consumers, making it crucial for brands to continually adapt and refine their strategies based on user behaviour and industry trends.

Success Beyond Metrics: Building Brand Authority

Achieving success beyond metrics in content marketing involves a holistic approach focused on building brand authority. Brands should strive to become thought leaders in their respective industries by consistently delivering high-quality, valuable content that addresses audience needs and challenges. Establishing credibility and trust through authentic storytelling, expert insights, and innovative campaigns can contribute to long-term brand loyalty. Prioritising the creation of meaningful connections with the audience, rather than just chasing quantitative metrics, positions a brand as a reliable source of information and solutions. By fostering a genuine and authoritative brand image, businesses can navigate the competitive landscape and secure a lasting impact on their target markets.

Overcoming Common Mistakes

Overcoming common mistakes in content marketing involves a strategic and reflective approach. Identifying and rectifying common pitfalls such as inconsistent branding, lack of audience understanding, or neglecting data analysis is crucial. Brands should prioritise continuous learning from both successes and failures, refining their content strategies accordingly. Emphasising quality over quantity, maintaining a consistent brand voice, and adapting to evolving consumer preferences contribute to sustained success. A proactive approach to addressing challenges and refining content based on analytics and audience feedback helps mitigate potential pitfalls, ensuring a more effective and impactful content marketing strategy.

Engaging the Audience: Interactivity and Personalisation

Engaging the audience through interactivity and personalisation is a key aspect of successful content marketing. Implementing strategies that encourage user participation, such as interactive quizzes, polls, or immersive multimedia experiences, can enhance the overall user experience and foster a deeper connection with the brand. Additionally, personalisation techniques, like tailored recommendations and customised content, resonate with individuals on a more personalised level, increasing relevance and engagement. By leveraging technology and data insights, brands can create dynamic and interactive content that not only captures attention but also establishes a meaningful and lasting relationship with their audience.

Conclusion

In summary, analysing the content marketing strategies of Canva and Spotify reveals distinct yet effective approaches in their respective industries. Canva’s success lies in its user-centric design, accessibility, and robust educational content, creating a comprehensive ecosystem that empowers users to unleash their creativity. By offering valuable resources and catering to diverse skill levels, Canva fosters brand loyalty and user engagement. On the other hand, Spotify’s content marketing prowess is exemplified by the Spotify Wrapped campaign, showcasing a harmonious blend of art, psychology, and technology. The personalised, shareable experience of Spotify Wrapped not only enhances user retention but also transforms the brand into a cultural phenomenon eagerly anticipated each year. Both cases emphasise the importance of understanding user needs, fostering community engagement, and utilising innovative content formats to establish a strong brand presence in competitive digital landscapes.

Ethical content marketing is not just a buzzword, but a fundamental shift in how businesses interact with their audience. In a world where consumers are becoming increasingly discerning, building trust and credibility is more critical than ever. In this article, we’ll delve into the nuances of ethical content marketing, exploring strategies that not only engage but also resonate with your audience.

In the digital age, where information is abundant, ethical content marketing stands out as a beacon of authenticity. It involves creating and distributing valuable, honest, and transparent content to build a genuine connection with your audience. Trust and credibility are the cornerstones of successful marketing endeavours.

Understanding Your Audience

The first step in ethical content marketing is understanding your audience. Conduct thorough research to identify their values, concerns, and preferences. This insight will help tailor your content to resonate with their ethical expectations.

Transparency in Communication

Honesty is the best policy, especially in content marketing. Clearly portray your products or services without embellishments. Disclose any partnerships or sponsorships to maintain transparency and foster trust.

Creating Valuable Content

Valuable content is the currency of ethical marketing. Provide information that is not only relevant, but also addresses the needs and concerns of your audience. By doing so, you position your brand as a reliable source of information.

Authenticity in Branding

Authenticity goes a long way in building trust. Avoid misleading practices and be true to your brand image. Consumers appreciate genuine businesses that stay true to their values.

Social Responsibility in Content

Today’s consumers are socially conscious. Align your content with social and environmental causes to demonstrate your commitment to making a positive impact. This not only builds trust but also fosters a sense of shared values.

Avoiding Clickbait and Sensationalism

While engaging headlines are essential, avoid clickbait and sensationalism. Misleading tactics may generate short-term interest, but they erode trust in the long run. Craft headlines that captivate without compromising honesty.

Respecting Privacy

Respecting user privacy is crucial in ethical content marketing. Clearly outline your data protection practices and obtain explicit consent for any data usage. Building trust requires a commitment to safeguarding your audience’s information.

Community Engagement

Foster community engagement by encouraging discussions and responding to audience feedback. This interaction not only humanizes your brand but also demonstrates your commitment to listening and improving.

Educating Your Audience

Educate your audience about the importance of ethical marketing. Raise awareness about deceptive practices in the industry and empower consumers to make informed choices.

Monitoring and Adaptation

Ethical standards evolve, and so should your marketing strategies. Regularly assess the ethical landscape, adapt your practices, and stay ahead of consumer expectations.

Case Studies of Ethical Content Marketing

Explore successful examples of ethical content marketing in your industry. Case studies provide valuable insights and practical lessons that can guide your own ethical marketing endeavours.

Challenges in Implementing Ethical Content Marketing

Balancing ethical considerations with business goals can be challenging. Identify and overcome industry-specific challenges to ensure a seamless integration of ethical content marketing.

Future Trends in Ethical Marketing

Stay abreast of emerging trends in ethical marketing. Anticipate changes in consumer expectations and proactively adopt ethical practices that align with evolving societal values.

Conclusion

In conclusion, ethical content marketing is not just a strategy; it’s a commitment to building lasting relationships with your audience. By prioritising transparency, authenticity, and social responsibility, you not only enhance your brand’s image but also contribute to a more ethical marketing landscape.

In the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing, one cannot ignore the significant impact influencers have on shaping brand narratives and engaging audiences. In this era of constant connectivity, influencers have become powerful storytellers who bridge the gap between brands and their target demographics. As a content creator navigating the dynamic world of online communication, understanding the role of influencers in content marketing is not just essential—it’s a game-changer.

The Authenticity Quotient

In an era saturated with advertisements and sponsored content, authenticity is the currency that resonates with audiences. Influencers, with their relatable personas and genuine connections with followers, bring a level of authenticity that traditional advertising often struggles to achieve. Collaborating with influencers allows brands to tap into this authenticity, humanising their image and establishing a more genuine connection with their audience.

Navigating Diverse Platforms

The digital landscape is diverse, and so are the platforms that influencers inhabit. From Instagram and YouTube to TikTok and podcasts, influencers have carved out niches in various corners of the internet. As a content creator, recognising the importance of choosing the right influencer and platform for collaboration is crucial. Understanding where your target audience spends their time and tailoring your content to fit the nuances of each platform is a strategy that pays dividends.

Beyond the Numbers: Micro vs. Macro Influencers

While the number of followers an influencer has is undoubtedly a key consideration, the rise of micro-influencers is challenging the traditional hierarchy. Micro-influencers, with smaller but highly engaged audiences, offer a more intimate and niche connection with their followers. As a content creator, exploring collaborations with micro-influencers can be an effective way to reach specific demographics and foster genuine connections.

Content Synergy: Collaboration that Converts

The synergy between influencers and content creators can be a potent force in content marketing. Crafting content that seamlessly integrates with an influencer’s style and resonates with their audience enhances the impact of a collaboration. Whether it’s a product review, a sponsored post, or a co-created piece of content, ensuring that the collaboration feels organic and aligns with both parties’ brand narratives is key to maximising its effectiveness.

Metrics that Matter

As a content creator, it’s essential to move beyond surface-level metrics and delve into the data that truly matters. Beyond likes and shares, measuring the impact of influencer collaborations involves assessing conversion rates, brand sentiment, and long-term engagement. Utilising analytics tools to track the success of collaborations allows content creators to refine their strategies and make data-driven decisions for future partnerships.

Building Long-Term Relationships

In the fast-paced world of digital marketing, building long-term relationships with influencers can provide sustained benefits. Collaborating with the same influencers over time helps create a consistent brand image and fosters a deeper connection with their audience. As a content creator, cultivating relationships built on trust and mutual understanding can lead to more authentic and impactful collaborations.

Conclusion

The role of influencers in content marketing is undeniably significant. As a content creator navigating this dynamic landscape, understanding the nuances of influencer collaboration is essential for staying relevant and resonating with target audiences. Embracing authenticity, choosing the right platforms, and forging meaningful partnerships are the building blocks of successful influencer collaborations in the ever-evolving world of content marketing.
